You can expect a response from me within 24 hours if your email follows the correct format. Otherwise, you will still get a response but likely much later.

0.4 Course Content

This course provides the foundation for programming and conducting statistical analysis in Python. In the first part of the course, we focus on introducing the fundamental elements of Python assuming students have little to no experience in programming. Next, we will get used to Git and the general idea of version control. Finally, we will dive into how to conduct real-world statistical analysis in Python using applications in social network analysis, machine learning, etc. as examples.

0.5.1 Labs

  • There will be 8 lab assignments, each worth 10 points.
    • The lab assignment will be available on Monday each week and be due Tuesday (sometimes Monday) the following week.
    • The lowest lab grade will be dropped.

0.5.2 Homework

  • There will be 10 homework assignments, each worth 100 points.
    • The homework assignment will be available on Monday each week.
    • Each homework assignment will have 2 deadlines:
      • A 100% deadline: a deadline to get up to 100 points.
      • A 80% deadline: late submissions are accepted up to this deadline, you can get up to 80 points.
    • There are unlimited attempts on the homework (except the last 2 homework). That is, you can answer the questions as many times as you want to get the maximum scores!
    • No homework grade will be dropped.
  • Homework assignments can be accessed through PrairieLearn.
    • You must log in using your Illinois log-in information (NetID and password).
    • Contact me ASAP if you run into any issue with PrairieLearn.

0.5.3 Exams

If you are unable to take an exam, you must contact the instructor at least 24 hours BEFORE the exam. All excuses must be verifiable. Conflict exams will be given only under legitimate or exceptional circumstances.

0.5.6 Grade Disputes

If you feel your homework, lab, or exam was graded incorrectly, you have one week from the date it was returned to discuss it with the instructor (please don’t email your TA about grades!). After one week, grading is final except for exceptional circumstances. You may not simply ask for a re-grade, but instead must justify to the staff why the grading was done incorrectly. Also, by disputing any grading, you agree to allow the instructor to review the entire homework or exam for other errors missed during grading.

0.5.7 Attendence

You are expected to attend all lectures (watch all lecture videos if online). Failure to do so may not have a direct effect on your course grade, but will likely have a significant indirect effect. Any known or potential extracurricular conflicts should be discussed in person with the instructor during the first week of classes, or as soon as they arise.

0.5.8 Academic Integrity

The official University of Illinois policy related to academic integrity can be found in Article 1, Part 4 of the Student Code. Section 1-402 in particular outlines behavior which is considered an infraction of academic integrity. These sections of the Student Code will be upheld in this course. Any violations will be dealt with in a swift, fair and strict manner. Homework assignments are meant to be learning experiences. You may discuss the exercises with other students, but you must write-up the solutions on your own. In short, do not cheat, it is not worth the risk. You are more likely to get caught than you believe. If you think you may be operating in a grey area, you most likely are.
